Role of Diesel Generator in AI Data Center Facility

An AI Server Data Center has its IT racks supported with energy from upstream sources including utility and energy storage through various power stages which have the facility's operation safeguarded in case of any unexpected power outage or transient events. However, in the ultimately worst situation where both backup energy and grid are output of supply, it is the diesel generator that functions as the sole source which the server racks should finally resort to for consistent operation.

The Process Diesel Generator is Triggered for Supporting Data Center

The preceding circumstances to diesel generation's being triggered for operation are dependent on the facility's architecture. For example, an ESS-integrated HVDC data center will have firstly the energy storage to back up the facility before the generator is set for running. While for directly-grid-tied facility through UPS from its MVAC-bus the diesel generator follows when both backup battery and grid fail to support the operation.

Below diagrams and notes explain what happens in an AI data center forming DC-bus Micro-grid before the diesel generation is triggered for operation.

Data Center Facility in Normal Operation

Power topology diagram of a data center in normal operation. The utility grid is highlighted in green, showing active power flowing through the medium voltage network, solid-state transformer, and DC distribution panel to power the compute rack.

In normal operation, the data center facility relies on utility power for continuous operation, with the BESS taking advantage of favorable conditions to store energy. (The downstream 800VDC energy storage serves as a supporting source to improve electrical characteristics at the load side, rather than providing overall facility-level resilience.)

Transition to BESS-Supported Micro-Grid

Power topology diagram illustrating a grid outage scenario. The utility grid is highlighted in red indicating a fault, while the BESS is highlighted in green, demonstrating its role as the active, temporary voltage source keeping the downstream data center network powered.

In the event of a grid outage, the facility shifts to relying on the BESS as the primary voltage source, temporarily forming an AC micro-grid at the MV level (which then feeds the downstream DC distribution). Crucially, the BESS must possess grid-forming capability to establish and maintain voltage and frequency in the absence of the utility grid. In this scenario, the BESS functions as a transient power bridge before the diesel generators are successfully online.

Diesel Generator Supports the Facility Operation

Power topology diagram showing a data center powered by a diesel generator. The utility grid and BESS are highlighted in red to indicate they are offline or depleted, while the on-premise generator and the entire downstream distribution path are highlighted in green, indicating active power delivery.

Before the BESS - acting as the temporary voltage source - runs out of energy, the previously activated diesel generators reach rated speed and take over the role of feeding the MV Network. Once the generators are stabilizing the load, the BESS is shifted to standby mode to prepare for any potential future anomalies.

Loading Testing Requirements for Diesel Generator

Power Capacity & Scalability

Evaluate massive generator arrays capable of delivering tens of megawatts to support AIDC facilities.

Single diesel generator units are typically rated between 2MW and 4MW. In real-world AIDC deployments, these units are paralleled to form massive generator arrays capable of delivering tens of megawatts to support the facility.

Low-Load Operation

Validate operational efficiency and prevent "wet stacking" at a load profile below 30%.

While not exclusive to AI workloads, testing at a load profile below 30% is critical. It validates the generator's operational efficiency, emissions compliance, and its ability to prevent "wet stacking" (unburned fuel buildup) during periods of low IT utilization or commissioning phases.

Transient & Stepped Load Response

Mimic the sudden power spikes inherent to heavy GPU/AI compute workloads.

Designed to mimic the sudden power spikes inherent to heavy GPU/AI compute workloads, this tests the generator's dynamic resilience. It evaluates voltage and frequency stability during aggressive load steps, such as sudden shifts from 0% to 50%, and subsequently stepped up to 100% block load.
