Evolving AI Data Center Infrastructure and Advanced Power Testing

Why Power Testing for AI Data Center?

Moving ahead from the current 415 VAC infrastructure towards the futuristic SST (Solid-State Transformer) backed on, the AI industry is constantly pursuing after improved PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) both for service efficiency and regulatory requirements (i.e., EU AI Act, Regulation 2024/1689, California AB 222). New challenges are simultaneous encountered at the innovation frontier where new designs and prototypes of power system should be validated for their resilience and robustness by emulated disturbances - here steps in the programmable power.

Real-World Technical Challenges

Advancements of AI Data Center's designs and hardware infrastructures are all with objective to tackle the shifting real-world operating conditions to secure the system's consistent and reliable functioning. Below are the main technical challenges.

+
High Power Load Fluctuation
+
Power Quality and Stress Resistance
+
Infrastructure & Design Revolution

High-Power Load Transitions

Modern AI workloads exhibit millisecond-level GPU load transients, with fluctuations of 10%–190%. Training involves rapid load swings due to batch computation and cluster synchronization, while large-scale multi-node inference increasingly behaves like training because of communication latency.

Power Quality Issues

Data centers are facing a growing power quality challenges. Internally, even brief outages can trigger large-scale data center shutdowns; externally, highly interconnected grids and power-electronics-dominated systems increase the risk of cascading failures across the network.

Constant-Evolving Architecture

A full-architecture solution is emerging for data center power reliability. On the AC side, traditional UPS-based architectures remain a mature and widely deployed baseline, now being enhanced with additional buffering and resilience capabilities; on the DC side, OCP-aligned architectures are gaining traction.

Eliminating Downtime from In-Lab and R&D Stage

Validating confidently the UPS's (Uninterruptible Power Supply) capability and robustness against ride-through events and realistic grid disturbances and load transients. A grid emulator replicating sudden supply change from simulated grid conditions together with a downstream load simulating server rack apply for assessing the UPS's seamless switching capability between grid and backup modes.

In the center, the UPS connects to a battery simulated by a TITAN Series Battery Simulator. On the right, the UPS output is connected to a TITAN AC Load Simulator featuring versatile CE RLC load emulation. Bullet points highlight scalable capabilities up to 10 MVA for the simulators.

Dynamic Cycling Test for Battery Backup Unit

ActionPower's DC power supplies are bidirectional and regenerative, with optional battery cycling software for validating BBU (Battery Backup Unit) characteristics through charge-discharge cycles that represents real-world data-center operation. The results support lifetime prediction and reliability assurance for mission-critical backup systems.

Workload Test for Battery Backup Unit

BBUs are supposed temporarily suppport the dynamic and shifting AI server and GPUs workloads during tripping the loss of voltage when unexpected utility shutdown happens, independent of what kind of power architecture the AI data center is built on like UPS-supported or HVDC system where no UPS is integrated. The BBU, operating during the outage and until the utlity recovery, should withstand the dramatic server current draw. DC load simulator applies to this test application.

Above, a Battery Simulator Power Supply provides DC interaction to the UPS and supports dynamic SOC emulation and fault injection. On the right, the UPS sends AC output to a Regenerative DC Load Simulator. Both the battery simulator and the load simulator have regenerative connections feeding power back into the Utility Grid.

HVDC-Converter

Set up coupled testing environment with ActionPower's grid simulator and bidirectional DC power supplies for validating comprehensively AC–DC and DC–DC converters in hybrid data-center architectures. We assess its performance of conversion efficiency, control stability, and fault ride-through under weak-grid conditions, variable SCR, and harmonic distortion.

Power then passes through an AC/DC Rectifier to a 380V HVDC bus, which is connected to a Battery Backup Unit and notes a 400V-800V development path. On the right, the HVDC bus feeds into an ATLAS DC Electronic Load and a PRL Regenerative DC Load Simulator. Key technical specifications for the CORTEX, ATLAS, and PRL units are listed alongside each device.

HVDC-PSU Validation

Validating transient response, ripple suppression, fault protection, and recovery behaviour under ultra-fast GPU load swings and high peak-to-average ratios. We setup emulated HVDC operating environment with high-voltage TITAN series bidirectional power supply and ATLAS electronic load for tightly following up its performance as if in real-world modern AI infrastructure.
