Technical FAQs About CORTEX Bidirectional DC Power Supply

These FAQs explain the engineering behind CORTEX, including regenerative source/load operation, compact rackmount power density, internal airflow design, busbar-style interconnection, modular maintenance, and parallel system expansion. The modular power architecture is also referenced in ActionPower's published patent application CN121791654A .

› What makes CORTEX a bidirectional DC power supply?
CORTEX operates as both a programmable DC source and a regenerative DC load. In source mode, it delivers controlled DC power to the device under test. In sink mode, it absorbs current returned from the DUT, enabling bidirectional source and load testing in one platform.
› How does regenerative operation help reduce energy loss?
During load operation, conventional electronic loads usually dissipate absorbed energy as heat. CORTEX uses regenerative technology to return recoverable energy through its internal power conversion path, helping reduce heat generation, cooling demand, and wasted energy during high-power testing.
› How does CORTEX achieve high power density in a compact chassis?
CORTEX uses a modular internal architecture that integrates input filtering, rectification, bus transfer, bidirectional power conversion, output filtering, and digital control into a compact rackmount structure. This stacked layout helps improve power density while keeping functional sections clearly organized.
› How is the bidirectional power conversion stage designed?
The internal bidirectional conversion stage uses a compact board-level arrangement that places the power conversion and control sections close together. This helps shorten internal connection paths, improve assembly consistency, and support a cleaner high-density power module design.
› How does CORTEX manage heat during source and sink operation?
CORTEX uses a structured internal cooling layout with a central fan assembly and separated airflow paths. Heat-generating power components are positioned within defined cooling zones, supporting thermal management during continuous source operation and regenerative load operation.
› Why does airflow structure matter in bidirectional testing?
Bidirectional testing can create sustained thermal stress, especially when the equipment is absorbing returned energy from the DUT. A defined airflow structure helps remove heat from power components, control sections, and expansion boards more effectively than an unorganized open chassis layout.
› What is the benefit of busbar-style internal interconnection?
CORTEX reduces dependence on loose internal wiring by using conductive posts and busbar-style interconnections between key power sections. This helps shorten high-current paths, reduce wiring complexity, improve assembly repeatability, and make the internal structure easier to inspect and maintain.
› How does CORTEX support modular maintenance?
CORTEX is built around modular subassemblies, including the front HMI, power module, input distribution section, rear panel, output protection area, and cover structure. This modular layout supports clearer internal partitioning, easier assembly, and more serviceable maintenance compared with densely wired conventional designs.
› How does CORTEX support parallel power expansion?
CORTEX supports scalable power expansion through synchronized parallel operation and high-speed communication between units. This allows multiple power supplies to work together as a higher-power DC test system for cabinet-level and large-scale applications.
› Does parallel operation affect control and measurement consistency?
CORTEX parallel expansion is designed to maintain coordinated control and measurement consistency across connected units. This is important for high-power battery, PCS, inverter, and production test systems where current sharing, stable response, and repeatable test results are required.
› What safety-related design features are built into CORTEX?
The internal design includes input surge suppression, circuit protection, grounding, insulation spacing, and output terminal protection. The output protection area is designed to improve operator safety while still allowing visual inspection during installation and maintenance.
› Why does the internal architecture matter for real test applications?
For battery, EV, PV, PCS, and DC converter testing, performance depends on more than headline power ratings. Thermal design, current path layout, control partitioning, serviceability, and cabinet integration all affect real test stability. CORTEX combines bidirectional power conversion, regenerative energy handling, organized airflow, modular construction, and scalable system expansion in one DC test platform.

6.5-Digit Voltage and Current Measurement

CORTEX integrates a high-precision voltage and current measurement system with 6.5-digit resolution, reducing the need for external precision meters in many automated test setups. The high-fidelity measurement capability supports accurate DUT performance evaluation in applications such as battery testing, photovoltaic inverter validation, EV power electronics, and production quality control.

DMPS (Digital Matrix Parallel System) for Scalable Power

With DMPS, Digital Matrix Parallel System, multiple CORTEX units can be connected through high-speed fiber-optic communication for synchronized power expansion. The system supports scalable configurations up to 100 units and up to 3 MW total power.

For cabinet-level integration, CORTEX can deliver up to 240 kW in a standard 42U cabinet. The 19-inch rackmount structure follows standard cabinet integration practices and supports high-density multi-unit test systems.

Redundant Operation in Parallel Systems

In a configured parallel system, if a slave unit fails during operation, excluding output-side or AC-side protection events, the remaining units can redistribute current within the configured operating limits and continue the test process. This helps reduce downtime in long-duration reliability tests, burn-in systems, and production validation.

Auto-Ranging Capability

CORTEX DC power supply is an advanced DC source that can automatically adjust on its own the output voltage and current while maintaining its output power according to its rated level. The function extends is range of services in terms of testing scenarios to deliver its full maximum power output across wider combination ranges of voltage and current.

Auto-Switching and Multiple Output Modes of CC, CV, CP, CR

CORTEX offers a flexible output mode switching thansk to which users are no longer required to pre-select a specific operating mode such as CV or CC as with those conventional programmable units. Rather, the mode switching with CORTEX DC is automatically realized based on user-defined target voltage and maximum current of the DUT against which the system automatically operates within these limits in either source or load mode and displays the active mode in real time. The function extends is range of services in terms of testing scenarios to deliver its full maximum power output across wider combination ranges of voltage and current.

CORTEX automatically realizes intelligent switching under Constant Voltage (CV), Constant Current (CC), and Constant Power (CP) modes based on \( P = U \times I \) for which the system maintains ontrolled parameter while allowing the others to vary with load conditions, and automatically transitions to the appropriate mode when any limit is reached to ensure safe and stable operation.

In Constant Resistance (CR) mode, the device maintains a programmed equivalent internal resistance, behaving like a voltage source with a series “virtual resistance.” This causes output voltage to drop with increasing current, enabling realistic power source emulation and load behavior evaluation.

Along with a range of built-in battery type profiles, supported by its functional features, CORTEX is a valuable instrument for testing, developing, and validating battery-powered devices and systems without actually using a physical battery.
